My Aspie-Ness | Way too emotional?
One thing that now I know to be typical of Asperger’s is getting overwhelmed by positive emotions, and needing to unleash them by stimming or talking endlessly about what caused them, special interests in particular. It is something that I love about myself, because I know I can be extremely happy (or “hyper”) even for apparently small things, while so many of my NT friends...

This morning
Abridged extract of an interview of my boss: I was afraid I would have had to talk to yeast in an empty lab at 10pm so I changed career.
Me reading it: That sounds great actually *___*

Ask Lifehacker: How Can I Turn Small Talk Into a... →
The article linked above is pretty good.
I really hate small talk too. I prefer much more when I meet (also online) my “nerdy” friends, and I can skip the introductions and start talk about interesting stuff, like fiscal policy measures or fantasy books or anything else we have in common. We could go on for hours.
Right now I am observing my co-workers during lunchtime, to learn how...

My Aspie-ness | A few times I have thought that...
… and I just pretend, because it’s better than admitting to be a big lazy fail.
But then I look at people and I see how different they are.
I read what they write, and I realize how I would never think like they do.
Then I talk to them, and many times what I say is not understood, even if to me it sounds completely rational and of course makes a lot of sense.
Then I try to be more...

Aspie, unknowingly | Avoiding the fear of change
I have changed house, town, even country, quite a few times by now. Alone. I have been asked quite a few times how I do it (by NTs, btw) - since people are supposed to be attached to places, and feel bad for leaving people. New towns are supposed to be scary, too - one doesn’t know anyone around the neighborhood, there could be bureaucracy to deal with, maybe language issues, and so...

How to Be Clever, and Not Annoying, When Asking... →
Another blog post from Lifehacker :)
Personally, I don’t like asking favors to people - even though I am always available if someone needs something. I end up convincing myself that I can do it myself or that I don’t need it after all.

Aspie Viewpoints | School and adapting to the NT...
As Asperger’s has become a Special Interest for me, for the time being, I have been reading a lot of blogs and watches lots of vlogs of Aspie people. In those involving younger kids, I have noticed that many of them are homeschooled.
Homeschooling is something I am not really familiar with, to be honest, because in my country it is mostly unheard of. I do know people that have been...

Saying "I don't know" →
Lifehacker is awesome.
I totally agree with the article. I am a honest person - if I don’t know something, I don’t make it up. I don’t try to look like someone I’m not. My favorite answer would be “I don’t know but let’s find out together”. However, my feeling is that society prefer people who just pretend to know and get away with it, rather than...

Aspie, unknowingly | Getting things done, Part...
So in Part 1 of this post I talked about deadlines. Now I will write about how I manage to meet them, or, at least, those of the short term kind.
To me, having a deadline doesn’t mean having to do the things right before having to hand in the work. Conversely, it means having a time frame in which I can do all the things I normally do, and I have to stuff in something I am told to do, or I...

Aspie, unknowingly | Getting things done, Part 1:...
In many books/articles about Asperger’s, I read that many Aspies have trouble with executive functioning. I tried to look it up but I can’t really get what it means exactly, because it seems like a very broad term.
What I did get, though, is that it is related to getting things done. To be honest, I don’t really think I have more issues with it than the average person....

My Aspie-ness | Special interests
When I first read about “special interests” in people with Asperger’s, I realized I knew very well what they were writing about. Everyone seems to experience them a little bit differently, so here’s my two cents.
I have always been “very absorbed” by something that I couldn’t really talk about because people wouldn’t listen to me. I usually have one...

Aspie Viewpoints | Fashion, and Life Among the NTs
In the beginning of May I started interning in an online retail company focused on apparel. I soon realized that my role was more of a social-media kind than purely IT as I thought. I even have to blog about fashion. Ugh.
As a premise, I have to say that I do like clothes - in terms of colors, patterns and fabrics - and I also understand business and social media marketing. I wouldn’t have...

Aspie, unknowingly | How I socialize
This is basically the pattern I have always followed:
place myself among people; unless there is only one other person, pick the one that looks the nicest or I had already talked before;
join the group he/she is talking with;
look what he or she is doing
try do mimic him/her
follow the person if he/she moves away, or pick another one and repeat the process.
When I was younger, the fact that...

Aspie vs. Unexpected Niceties
Right now I am living on my own in a sort of student residence/hostel, and there I have come across quite a few people in the past days. My parents are happy that I am staying in a place where I can meet some folks of my age, but actually I couldn’t care less, so I don’t use the common rooms.
Last night, though, a very weird thing happened. A random guy knocked on my door, told me that he just...

Aspie Viewpoints | Selfishness & celebrations
A few Sundays ago read a Tweet by @AspergerSadie (go follow her!), mentioning being overwhelmed during family celebrations and feeling selfish for wishing to be doing something quiet instead.
This made me reflect, as I had just come back from one such event. It was just a lunch at a restaurant with the family, but it was exhausting for me - the room was too loud, there were too many people trying...

My Aspie-ness | Patterns and meaning
I have been watching Touch on television. I know it might look a bit disrespecful in its stereotypical representation of Autism (anyway, the Teller guy thinks it’s not Autism), but nonetheless I found it pretty intriguing. The reason is that I always thought that what happens every person is not a sequence of random events but is in reality following a pattern, and that people come across...

Aspie Viewpoints | Thoughts on honesty - what I...
If you feel grateful towards someone, thank them. They might think they have just carried out their duty.
If you need the help of someone near you, ask them. They might not notice that something is wrong.
If you notice that someone is doing something inappropriate, tell them, kindly. They might not be aware of it.

Aspie, unknowingly | Family life, everyday...
Excerpts of family life before my parents knew about the diagnosis
“Don’t spin on your chair in the office. People see you.”
But customers don’t. I don’t spin when customers are around. Even if I spin, I do my job, and well. Stim. Not normal.
“You look like a retard, with headphones on.”
I listen to orchestral pieces. I move in sync. Not normal.

I have just moved abroad... again...
… and started a new job today. Yay!
Big changes are big, so, the more planned they are, the calmer I am. I usually take it slowly. These are the thing I have done at least a week in advance, in order to move and start working smoothly:
find a place to stay for a couple of months (I had started searching right after knowing that I was accepted on the job); it would have meant too much...

Aspie, unknowingly | Invited or not?
Since I was a kid, I have always struggled with the mysteries of event invitations. I have always been happy to receive invitations, preferably written ones. However, needless to say, it happened many times (and still happens) that I didn’t receive one when something was going on among my peers. This is what often happens:[[MORE]]
